POMONA -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team has knocked a team out of the California Collegiate Athletic Association lead for the second time in as many weeks.
The Golden Eagles used a game-breaking 13-2 run in the late stages of the second half and then held off Cal Poly Pomona, 64-61, Wednesday night in Kellogg Gym. Cal State L.A. (16-9, 12-9 CCAA) dropped the Broncos into a second-place tie with Humboldt State, one-half game behind first-place Chico State.
Last week, Cal State L.A. knocked Chico State temporarily out of first place with a win in the Eagles Nest.
The Golden Eagles are alone in sixth place, one game out of fourth place with one conference game remaining. Cal State L.A. has already clinched a spot in the CCAA Championship Tournament, which will begin on Tuesday.
The Golden Eagles got a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double from
Leland Jones and 15 points from
Ryan Wetherell, who also hit a pair of free throws with two seconds left to finally put the game out of reach.
Carl Hoffman had an efficient game with eight points on 4-of-6 shooting and
Jordan Richard had seven points, eight rebounds and three blocks.
Mitchel Anderson had a game-high 23 points for Cal Poly Pomona, but he was the only player to reach double figures. Matt Rosser and Dwayne Fells had nine points each.
Cal State L.A. shot 42 percent for the game (21-of-50) and held Cal Poly Pomona to 38.2 percent shooting (21-of-55). The Golden Eagles were also efficient at the free-throw line, knocking down 17-of-23 attempts. Cal State L.A. enjoyed a 40-32 rebounding edge and had 12 turnovers to eight for the Broncos.
Cal State L.A. started strongly and scored the first 10 points of the game. Jones had eight points during the stretch, while Richard had the other two. The Golden Eagles held the Broncos scoreless for the first five minutes of the game.
Chris Robinson made a layup following a Jones steal to keep the lead at 10, 12-2, but the Broncos went on a 17-5 run to take their first lead at 19-17.
A 3-pointer by
Quinton Watkins snapped a 21-21 tie and two free throws by RIchard snapped a 26-26 tie. An offensive rebound basket by Hoffman gave the Golden Eagles a 32-29 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles trailed, 44-43, before making their game-deciding run. A basket by Jones gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good and 3-pointers by
Bussey Ellis and Wetherell made it 51-44. An offensive rebound basket by RIchard made it 53-44 and, after a basket by the Broncos briefly stopped a 10-0 run, a 3-pointer by Wetherell boosted the lead to 56-46. Two free throws by Robinson gave the Golden Eagles a 58-48 lead with 2:11 to go.
After the Broncos sliced the lead to three points, a free throw by Watkins made the lead 59-55. A 3-pointer by the Broncos made it 59-58, but Ellis hit a free throw to make it 60-58. Cal Poly Pomona was unsuccessful on its next possession and Jones got the rebound, setting up two free throws by Wetherell that made it 62-58 with 21 seconds to go. Cal Poly Pomona hit another 3-pointer, but this one came after an offensive rebound and with only six seconds left. Wetherell was then fouled and hit both free throws with two seconds left to end it.
Cal State L.A. will conclude its regular season on Friday with a road game at San Francisco State.
