Golden Eagles Unable To Slow Down Humboldt State In Loss

Box Score

ARCATA -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team played one of its best games of the season in a win over Humboldt State earlier in the season, but the Golden Eagles were unable to duplicate that effort on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles trailed by only four points at halftime, but couldn't pull any closer and fell to the Jacks, 74-55, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest in Lumberjack Arena. Cal State L.A. (14-8, 10-8 CCAA) had to settle for a weekend split of conference games and remained in a sixth-place tie with Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Humboldt State (17-5, 13-5 CCAA) remained in a three-way tie for the CCAA lead.

The Golden Eagles, who outscored the Jacks by 21 points in the second half of a 68-48 win in the Eagles Nest earler in the season, weren't nearly as sharp on Saturday. Cal State L.A. struggled offensively all night and shot just 36.8 percent for the game (21-of-57), while Humboldt State shot 47.4 percent (20-of-42). Both teams had 34 rebounds, while Cal State L.A. had 17 turnovers to 13 for the Jacks.

Cal State L.A. was also whistled for a season-high 28 fouls and Humboldt State was effective from the free-throw line, knocking down 30-of-36 attempts. The Golden Eagles were only 8-of-17.

Chris Robinson had 10 points and nine rebounds to lead Cal State L.A., while Marc Wilson had nine points. Carl Hoffman had seven points and three rebounds.

Brandon Sperling led four Jacks in double figures with 16 points. Scott Clark added 14 points and six rebounds, Randy Hunter had 13 points and eight rebounds and Kyle Baxter had 12 points and two rebounds.

Despite committing 13 fouls in the first half, the Golden Eagles trailed by only four points at halftime, 32-28. The Golden Eagles had an early lead after a 3-pointer by Bussey Ellis gave them a 10-8 advantage. A 3-pointer by Quinton Watkins tied the game at 17-17 and another 3-pointer by Watkins gave the Golden Eagles what would be their final lead of the night, 20-19, with six minutes remaining in the first half.

The Jacks went on an 11-3 run to take a 30-23 lead and never trailed again. A three-point play by Ryan Wetherell brought the Golden Eagles back to within 30-26 and a basket by Leland Jones made it 30-28. Humboldt State scored the final two points of the half to take a 32-28 halftime lead.

Humboldt State opened the second half with a 9-2 run to open up a 41-30 lead before a 3-pointer by Robinson got the Golden Eagles a little closer. A dunk by Wilson made it 44-37 and baskets by Wilson and Jones brought the Golden Eagles to within five points, 47-42. Humboldt State, though, scored the next eight points and led by double-digit margins the rest of the way.

Humboldt State led by as many as 21 points late in the game before a pair of free throws by Percy Lemle accounted for the final scoring.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a home game against one of the conference leaders, Chico State.
