Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team didn't need to worry about overcoming a slow start on Saturday in their second game in the CSULA Thanksgiving Classic.
The Golden Eagles hit a program record 14 shots from behind the 3-point arc and led from start to finish in a 72-38 win over Pt. Loma Nazarene in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (4-0) scored the first five points of the game and never trailed. The Golden Eagles led by as many as 25 points in the first half and by as many as 37 points in the second half.
In the early game on Saturday, Cal State Dominguez Hills posted its first win of the season with an 81-53 victory over Fresno Pacific.
Cal State L.A.'s 14 successful 3-pointers eclipsed the old mark of 13 set in 2010.
Lacey Gibbons led the way with a career-high 23 points. She hit seven 3-pointers, which also set a Cal State L.A. record. She broke the old mark of six, last accomplished by Amber Fouse in 2006.
Tessondra Williams had 13 points, all in the first half. For the second straight game, Cal State L.A. had 12 players score points in the contest.
Cal State L.A. (4-0) shot 38.9 percent for the game (28-of-72) and half their field goals were 3-pointers (14-of-32) and the Golden Eagles' percentage from behind the arc was better (42.9 percent) than their shots from inside the arc.
Point Loma (2-1) got 13 points from Carlott Kloppenburg and 10 rebounds from Abby Boorman. The Sea Lions shot just 20.8 percent (11-of-53) and made only five of their 25 attempts from behind the 3-point arc.
Cal State L.A. had a 51-40 rebounding edge and forced 28 turnovers while committing 20.
Maryum Jenkins had 10 rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Kaija Powell had nine rebounds.
Cal State L.A., which had started slowly in each of its first three games and trailed by at least seven points in the first half, came out with great intensity on Saturday. The Golden Eagles got back-to-back 3-pointers from Williams and
Paige Melville to start the game and had a quick 8-3 lead after another basket by Melville.
After Point Loma closed to within 8-6, the Golden Eagles went on a 16-2 run to break the game open.
Kelli Lewis started the run with a layup and, after a free throw by the Sea Lions' Erin Anderson, Jenkins hit back-to-back baskets to give the Golden Eagles a 14-7 edge. Gibbons followed with a 3-pointer and, after a free throw by Kyla Bailey, Williams hit a pair of free throws, a 3-pointer and short jumper to make it 24-8.
Williams hit another 3-pointer to make it 27-10 and start an 11-0 run. Powell scored after a steal and layup and Gibbons made back-to-back 3-pointers to give Cal State L.A. a 35-10 lead. Point Loma responded by scoring the next eight points and was able to pull to within 38-20 at halftime.
Point Loma got a 3-pointer from Kloppenburg to open the second half and made it 38-23, but the Golden Eagles got a layup from
Richelle Najera, a 3-pointer by Gibbons and a basket from
Devin Riezebos to boost the lead back to 22 points, 45-23.
The lead never dipped under 20 points again and five consecutive points from
Chiara DiMarco gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead, 72-35, late in the game.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest at UC San Diego.
