Box Score CARSON -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team followed a familiar script in its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener Tuesday night at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Just like they did in a non-conference win over Azusa Pacific, the Golden Eagles started slowly, but put things together in time to record an 86-69 win over the Toros in the Torodome. Cal State L.A. (2-0, 1-0 CCAA) trailed by as many as seven points in the first half, but surged to take a six-point halftime lead before breaking the game open in the second half.
Tessondra Williams led four Golden Eagles in double figures with 19 points, while
Maryum Jenkins had 18 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Kelli Lewis had 12 points and five rebounds, while
Paige Melville had 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Breanne Garcia had 18 points and four rebounds to lead Cal State Dominguez Hills (0-2, 0-1 CCAA). Kielyn Wilson had 15 points and nine rebounds and Monay Lee had 13 points and six rebounds.
Cal State L.A. shot 40.9 percent (26-of-64) and limited Cal State Dominguez Hills to just 31.8 percent shooting (21-of-66). The Golden Eagles were 6-of-17 from behind the 3-point range (35 percent), while the Toros were 6-of-14 (43 percent). Cal State L.A. was 28-of-36 from the free-throw line, while Cal State Dominguez Hills was 21-of-33.
The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 53-39, but forced 21 turnovers while committing 13.
Cal State L.A. trailed by seven points on a couple of occassions in the first half and didn't take its first lead until a 3-pointer by Williams gave the Golden Eagles a 31-30 advantage. The Golden Eagles added seven more points on a pair of free throws by Melville, a free throw by Jenkins, a basket by
Devin Riezebos and a layup by Williams and settled for a 38-32 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles scored the first six points of the second half to extend their lead to double digits for the first time. Lewis, Jenkins and Riezebos scored baskets to make it 44-32 and a three-point play by Riezebos gave the Golden Eagles a 51-35 lead. The Toros fought back and closed the deficit to seven points, but a 3-pointer by
Lacey Gibbons started a 9-0 run that extended the lead back to 16 points. Williams added a basket,
Alyssa Hanson scored on a layup and Melville got a basket to complete the run.
Cal State Dominguez Hills had one more run that sliced the deficit to eight points at 69-61 with 3:34 left, but
Kaija Powell and Williams got baskets to get the lead to 73-61 and the Golden Eagles made nine free throws in the final minute, including six by Lewis, to put the game away.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday when the Golden Eagles host a two-day Thanksgiving Classic. Cal State Dominguez Hills will start things off with a game against Point Loma at 1 p.m. and Cal State L.A. will follow against Fresno Pacific at 3 p.m.
