Box Score CHICO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team completed a successful road trip with its fourth consecutive victory.
The Golden Eagles started quickly and then scored the final four points of the match to complete a 25-18, 25-18, 26-24 victory over Chico State Saturday night in Shurmer Gym. Cal State L.A. (9-9, 7-4 CCAA) finished the first round of California Collegiate Athletic Association play riding a four-match winning streak. The Golden Eagles remain in a tie for fourth place in the conference, just two games out of first place and one game out of second place.
Kymberly Silveyra led a balanced Cal State L.A. attack with 10 kills, while
Marquis Mora added eight kills, seven blocks and two aces.
Loreal Carter had seven kills and three blocks. Chico State (12-6, 6-5 CCAA) received 12 kills from Ellie Larronde and 10 kills from Alex Shurtz.
Cal State L.A. had a 38-35 edge in kills and outhit the Wildcats, .238-.110. The Golden Eagles had a 9-4 edge in blocks and had a 9-5 advantage in service aces.
Alexandra Bura had 30 set assists and two aces for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. started the match on fire, jumping out to a quick 16-4 lead in the first set. The Wildcats fought back and closed to within 18-15, but the Golden Eagles scored the next six points to regain control. An attack error started the run and was followed by two Silveyra kills, a Carter kill, and two attack errors to get to set point. The set ended on a service error.
The Golden Eagles started the second set strongly as well, opening up a 14-6 advantage. The Wildcats closed to within 15-10, but a kill by
Reanna Hill and a block by Hill and Carter restored a seven-point edge at 17-10. A kill by Hill made it 24-17 and an attack error by the Wildcats ended the set.
The third set was competitive and the Golden Eagles had to fight off a pair of set points to complete the sweep. It was a set of runs. A Mora kill gave the Golden Eagles an 18-16 lead, but Chico State scored the next four points to take a 20-18 lead. Cal State L.A. then scored four straight points on an attack error, two aces by Bura and another Chico State attack error to open up a 22-20 lead. It was then Chico State's turn to score four straight points and that brought the Wildcats to set point at 24-22.
The Golden Eagles then scored four straight points to end the match. A kill by Carter started the final run and a Chico State attack error tied it at 24-24. A kill by Carter got the Golden Eagles to match point and a solo block by
Samantha Potter ended the contest.
Cal State L.A. will return to action with a home match next Friday, Oct. 19, against UC San Diego.
