Golden Eagles Take Over Second With Win Over Otters

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team extended its best winning streak since 2006 to six games and took over second place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association in the process.
 
The Golden Eagles shot a blistering 57.1 percent and beat Cal State Monterey Bay, 79-64, Saturday night in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (13-5, 11-3 CCAA) held a 16-point halftime lead and never let the advantage dip into single digits in the second half.
 
The Golden Eagles trailed only once, at 2-0, and knocked down 17-of-28 field-goal attempts in the opening period. Cal State Monterey Bay (13-4, 10-3 CCAA) made only 26.7 percent of its attempts in the opening half and had an uphill battle the entire way.
 
Cal State L.A. salvaged a regular-season split with the Otters, who had won five straight games against the Golden Eagles.
 
Lacy Ramon had a game-high 20 points to lead four Golden Eagles in double figures. Jazzi Johnson had another outstanding game with a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double, Maryum Jenkins had 12 points and Devin Riezebos had a season-high 11 points and four rebounds.
 
Brandi Stephens had 12 points and four rebounds to lead the Otters. Erika Ward and Shonetta Crain-Williams had 11 points and seven rebounds and Jenna Bandy had 10 points.
 
The Golden Eagles also got seven points from Samantha Hansen, six points and three rebounds from Richelle Najera and five points and three rebounds from Tessondra Williams. Cal State L.A. got scoring from eight players and contributions from all 13 players who saw action.
 
Cal State Monterey Bay had a 36-33 rebounding edge, while the two teams had a combined 37 turnovers, 19 by the Golden Eagles and 18 by the Otters. Cal State L.A. was 20-of-25 from the free-throw line, while Cal State Monterey Bay was 10-of-12 from the line.
 
Cal State L.A. took command early and was able to withstand every Cal State Monterey Bay challenge. After Crain-Williams scored the opening basket of the game, the Golden Eagles scored eight straight points to take the lead for good. Jenkins started the run with a go-ahead 3-pointer and Johnson followed with a layup. Jenkins then converted a three-point play and the Golden Eagles were off and running.
 
A 3-pointer by Williams and a basket by Ramon gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead at 17-6 and Cal State L.A. never looked back.
 
A basket by Ward made it 34-23 late in the first half, but a basket by Ramon and a three-point play by Riezebos made it 39-23 at halftime.
 
Cal State L.A. boosted its lead to 49-28 after a basket by Williams with 14:50 to ply and a 3-pointer by Ramon made it 60-37 with 11 minutes remaining. Cal State Monterey Bay sliced the advantage to 14 points, 64-50 with six minutes left, but Cal State L.A. scored the next seven points to regain a 21-point edge. The Otters closed to within 14 points again with just 2:20 to go, but Johnson and Ramon hit two free throws each to restore order.
 
Cal State L.A. will return to action with a road game at UC San Diego next Friday in La Jolla.
