LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer got off to a quick start Saturday and never looked back while recording its second straight shutout of the season.
The Golden Eagles struck for three goals in a 19-minute span of the opening period and went on to a 3-0 victory over Colorado Mesa Saturday night at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (2-0) has outscored its first two opponents, 9-0.
Antti Arvola notched his second goal of the season to open the scoring,
Marc Hess added a goal on a penalty kick and
Rosario Bras completed the scoring with his first goal of the season.
Cal State L.A. enjoyed a 17-6 advantage in shots, while both teams had four corner kicks.
Jose Martinez made one save in goal for the Golden Eagles to record his second shutout. Micah Conrads made a pair of saves in the first half for Colorado Mesa (0-2), while Caleb Ealey made three saves while playing in the second half.
The Golden Eagles, who scored five of their six goals in the second half of Thursday's 6-0 win over Saint Martin's, did all their scoring in the first 38 minutes on Saturday.
Arvola got the game's first goal in the 19th minute. Timo Schwar got the play started with a pass to
Jason Swope, who got the ball to Arvola. Arvola then rifled a shot just inside the near post for his second goal in two games.
Hess made it 2-0 for the Golden Eagles when he converted on a penalty kick in the 22nd minute.
Bras, making his first appearance of the season, gave the Golden Eagles a 3-0 lead when he got a pass from
Jordan Payne and placed a shot just inside the near post.
Cal State L.A. kept the pressure on in the second half, but the Mavericks battled as well and neither team could score in the final 45 minutes. Cal State L.A. had a 9-3 shot advantage in the second period.
Cal State L.A. will open California Collegiate Athletic Association action next Friday, Sept. 9, with a home game against UC San Diego.
