Golden Eagles Score Late To Post Win Over San Bernardino

Box Score

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team used some late heroics to post an important California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Cal State San Bernardino.

After the Coyotes tied it in the 72nd minute, the Golden Eagles scored twice in the final nine minutes of regulation to record a 4-2 victory Friday in Jesse Owens Stadium.  Cal State L.A. (5-0-2, 3-0-2 CCAA), ranked seventh in the nation, allowed two goals in a game for the first time this season, but picked up the win.

Antti Arvola scored a pair of goals on penalty kicks for the Golden Eagles to give Cal State L.A. a pair of one-goal leads. The Coyotes (2-4, 1-4 CCAA), though, got the first equalizer in the 55th minute and then tied the game again in the 72nd minute.

Cal State L.A. responded with the eventual game-winner in the 82nd minute when Jason Swope, who scored two late goals to lift the Golden Eagles to a 2-2 tie Sunday with Chico State, took a beautiful pass from Rosario Bras through the defense and knocked a shot into goal for his third goal of the season.

Bras scored in the final minute after Cal State San Bernardino got caught in an out-numbered attack. With the Coyotes pressing the issue after a foul on Cal State L.A.'s side of the field, the ball was cleared after a free kick ahead to Bras, who dribbled in with Marvin Sandoval, got around the lone defender and beat the goalkeeper one-on-one for his fifth goal of the season.

Tanner Olinger made two saves for Cal State San Bernardino, while Waleed Cassis made two saves for Cal State L.A.

The Golden Eagles had a 12-8 advantage in shots, while the Coyotes had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute after Timo Schwar was fouled in the box. Arvola connected on the ensuing penalty kick for his third goal of the season.

That's how the score remained until Cal State San Bernardino's Corey Hostetter got his first goal of the season. A free kick by Martin Esqueda was won by Hostetter in the box and his shot found the lower corner of the net in the 55th minute.

Cal State L.A. regained the lead after a Cal State San Bernardino hand ball in the box. Arvola again connected, this time for his fourth goal of the year.

Once again, though, Cal State San Bernardino battled back and got the equalizer. Cal State L.A. was unable to clear the ball after two attempts and Ricky Prouty pounced on the loose ball inside the box and ripped a shot inside the near post in the 72nd minute.

Cal State L.A. took the lead for the third time and this time held the advantage. Sandoval got the ball to Bras, who sent a through ball to an onrushing Swope. The senior forward didn't miss and connected on his third goal of the season, all of them in the last two games.

Cal State San Bernardino was fouled in the final minute of play and pushed forward to play the free kick. Cal State L.A., though, was able to clear the ball out of danger and the end result was Bras' fifth goal of the season.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a home game against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
