SEASIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team got off to a promising start Saturday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match at Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Golden Eagles took the opening set, but the Otters stormed back and took a 19-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-20 decision in the Kelp Bed. Cal State L.A. (4-2, 1-1 CCAA) had a four-match winning streak snapped and was forced to settle for a split in the first weekend of conference play.
Cal State Monterey Bay (5-0, 2-0 CCAA) had a big 57-39 edge in kills and outhit the Golden Eagles, .235 - .116. Cal State L.A. had a 11-6 advantage in blocks.
Samantha Potter had nine kills and 14 digs to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Reanna Hill had eight kills and 14 digs.
Kaylynne Taeatafa had seven kills, 29 set assists and three blocks.
Melanie Lashbrook had 18 kills to lead four Otters in double figures. Rheann Fall had 16 kills, Rachel Freeno had 12 kills and Julie Ashen had 10 kills.
Mary Laupepa had a team-high six blocks to go along with three kills and a service ace, while
Marquis Mora had five kills and five blocks. Mora and Taeatafa had two service aces each.
The Golden Eagles broke an 18-18 tie in the opening set with a 5-0 run. A kill by Potter broke the tie and back-to-back aces from Taeatafa made it 21-18. A block by Laupepa and Hill and an attack error extended the lead to 23-18. The Golden Eagles eventually closed out the set on a kill by Taeatafa.
Cal State L.A. had a 9-7 lead in the second set before Cal State Monterey Bay went on a 14-3 run to take control and ultimately evened the match. The Otters raced out to a 12-3 lead in the third set and the Golden Eagles never recovered.

Kymberly Silveyra tied the fourth set at 14-14, but Cal State Monterey Bay scored the next three points and led the rest of the way. An ace by Laupepa pulled the Golden Eagles to within 21-19, but that was as close as they would get.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Wednesday with a match at California Baptist.
