SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team had a decent chance to end its lengthy losing streak Saturday night in Cousoullis Arena, but Cal State San Bernardino refused to let it happen.
The Golden Eagles pulled even with 11 minutes to play, but came up empty down the stretch and lost to the Coyotes, 62-53, Saturday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game. Cal State L.A. (6-14, 3-13 CCAA) lost its eighth straight game.
Lacy Ramon had 14 points, six rebounds and three assists for the Golden Eagles, while
Angeline Jefferson had 12 points and
Sonia Miller had 11 points.
Brionna Baker had nine points and nine rebounds.
Eisha Sheppard had a game-high 20 points for Cal State San Bernardino (16-3, 12-3 CCAA), while Amber Glasser had 11 points.
The Golden Eagles shot just 31.6 percent for the game (18-of-57) and just 25 percent in the second half (8-of-25) while the game was still in the balance. Cal State San Bernardino shot 38.9 percent for the game (21-of-54) and 33.3 percent (8-of-24) in the second half.
Cal State L.A. had a 40-34 rebounding edge and had 17 turnovers to 15 for the Coyotes. The Golden Eagles were 12-of-16 from the free-throw line, while the Coyotes were 14-of-16.
The Golden Eagles got off to a good start and took an early 6-3 lead after a layup by Miller. The Golden Eagles still held a 17-14 lead following a pair of free throws by Ramon, but the Coyotes scored the next 11 points to open up a 25-17 lead. The Coyotes led by as many as 12 points in the first half, 38-26, but the Golden Eagles closed the half with a 3-pointer by Ramon and a basket by Baker to make it 38-31 at halftime.
The Golden Eagles continued to cut into the deficit in the second half and finally caught the Coyotes at 46-46 after two free throws by Ramon and a layup by Jefferson with 11:29 to go.
Cal State San Bernardino responded by scoring the next six points and led the rest of the way. Cal State L.A. still trailed by just five points at 54-49 after a free throw by Miller with 3:10 left and pulled to within four points at 55-51 after a basket by Baker with 1:14 to go.
The Coyotes, though, hit five free throws in the final minute to hold off the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday, Feb. 11, with a home game against San Francisco State.
