ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team saw its quest for a spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament come to an end on Wednesday.
The Golden Eagles surrendered the first 11 points of the game and the first nine points of the second half and lost to Sonoma State, 52-38, Wednesday in The Wolves' Den. Cal State L.A. (7-18, 4-17 CCAA) fell two games back of the eighth-place Seawolves (8-17, 6-15 CCAA) with just one game remaining.
Lacy Ramon had 16 points and six rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Alisha Belt had six points and a season-high 18 rebounds.
Erika Ruiz had eight points and six rebounds.
Jaclyn Bisordi had 12 points and five rebounds, while Taylor Vigil had nine points and 10 rebounds. Eight Sonoma State players scored in the game, while the Golden Eagles got points from only five players.
Cal State L.A. struggled mightily all evening long against Sonoma State's defense. The Golden Eagles shot just 18 percent for the game and connected on only 13 of their 72 field-goal attempts. Cal State L.A. was also just 4-of-29 (13.8 percent) from behind the 3-point arc.
Sonoma State shot 38.2 percent (21-of-55) and made 22 percent (4-of-18) from 3-point range.
The rebounding battle was a draw, with each team grabbing 48. The Golden Eagles had 13 turnovers and forced Sonoma State into 17.
Cal State L.A. was an efficient 8-of-9 from the free-throw line, while Sonoma State was just 6-of-12.
The Seawolves scored the first 11 points of the game and the Golden Eagles didn't get on the board until a 3-pointer by Ruiz with 5:30 gone. That started a 9-0 run Cal State L.A. run that included baskets from
Danielle Snyder, Belt and
Angeline Jefferson. Another 3-pointer by Ramon brought the Golden Eagles to within one point at 13-12, but the Seawolves closed the half on an 8-2 run to take a 21-14 lead at halftime.
Sonoma State then scored the first nine points of the second half to open up a 30-14 lead and the Seawolves led by double-digit margins for the rest of the game.
Cal State L.A. will conclude its season with a game at Humboldt State on Friday night.
