Golden Eagles Come Up Short In Bid To End Losing Streak

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team saw its bid to end its longest losing streak of the season come up just short.
 
The Golden Eagles was tied with San Francisco State with three minutes left, but the Gators pulled away for a 65-61 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory Friday in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (6-15, 3-14) lost its ninth straight game and slipped into a four-way tie for ninth place in the conference.
 
The Golden Eagles also fell two games behind eighth-place Sonoma State. The top eight teams qualify for the CCAA Championship Tournament.
 
Sonia Miller scored 14 points to lead four Golden Eagles in double figures. Lacy Ramon had 13 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Angeline Jefferson also had 13 points. Erika Ruiz added 12 points and eight rebounds.
 
Dominique Hunter led San Francisco State (3-18, 3-14 CCAA) with 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Michaela Booker had 16 points and five rebounds. Nicole Hicks had 12 points and seven rebounds, while Sherika Miller had 10 points.
 
Cal State L.A. shot 37.9 percent from the floor (22-of-58), while San Francisco State shot 38.2 percent (21-of-55). The Gators enjoyed a 39-35 rebounding edge and committed 13 turnovers to 12 for Cal State L.A.

The Gators were outstanding at the free-throw line, knocking down 19-of-21 for the game, including 15-of-16 in the second half. Cal State L.A. was 12-of-18 and 7-of-10 in the second half.
 
The Golden Eagles scored the first six points of the game thanks to four points from Jefferson and a pair of free throws by Ruiz. The Gators, though, went on a 15-2 run to open up a 15-8 lead after a 3-pointer by Erica Greer.
 
The Gators led by as many as eight points in the first half before a basket by Jefferson made it 35-29 at halftime.
 
San Francisco State opened up its biggest lead of the game, 39-29, after a basket by Booker with 18 minutes to go. Cal State L.A. rallied, though, and tied the game at 46-46 after a pair of free throws by Ruiz with 11 minutes to play. Baskets by Danielle Snyder and Jefferson put the Golden Eagles ahead, 50-46, and a 3-pointer by Ramon gave the Golden Eagles their biggest edge of the second half, 53-48 with seven minutes left.
 
San Francisco State, though, tied it at 54-54 after a pair of free throws by Hunter and a 3-pointer by Booker gave the Gators the lead for good at 57-54 with 1:30 left. A pair of free throws by Greer made it 59-54 before a basket by Jefferson and two free throws by Miller cut the deficit to one point at 59-58 with one minute left. San Francisco State then made all six of its free-throw attempts down the stretch to preserve its lead.
 
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday night with a home game against Cal State Monterey Bay.
