LA JOLLA – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team did not enjoy a successful beginning to a weekend against two of the California Collegiate Athletic Association's top teams.
The Golden Eagles was unable to slow down UC San Diego and fell to the Tritons, 25-19, 25-18, 25-21, Friday night in RIMAC Arena. Cal State L.A. (9-10, 6-8 CCAA) had a two-match winning streak snapped and lost for the second time this season to UC San Diego (14-4, 10-4 CCAA).
Natalia Gonzalez had 10 kills in 19 attacks for a .421 hitting percentage, while
Marquis Mora, last week's CCAA Player of the Week, had 10 kills and a .412 hitting percentage.
UC San Diego, though, had a 44-38 edge in kills and out-hit the Golden Eagles, .271 - .198. The Tritons also had an 8-3 advantage in blocks and a 6-1 edge in service aces.
Katie Condon led a balanced UC San Diego attack with 13 kills, while Hillary Williamson had 12 kills. Roxanne Brunsting had eight kills and 21 set assists.
Chelsea Hamilton had eight kills for the Golden Eagles, while
Kaylynne Taeatafa had 33 set assists and six digs.
April Reyes had a match-high 16 digs for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. fell into a big 21-10 hole in the opening set and never could recover. A kill by Gonzalez got the Golden Eagles to within 22-16 and two straight kills from Mora saved a pair of set points before UC San Diego took advantage of an attack error to close out the set.
The Golden Eagles started well in the second set and opened up a 13-10 lead after a kill by Gonzalez. The Golden Eagles were tied at 14-14 and 15-15, but UC San Diego scored the next three points and led the rest of the way.
The Golden Eagles led as late as 19-18 in the third set following a kill by Gonzalez, but the Tritons got the next two points and never trailed again. A kill by Hamilton made it 21-20, but that was as close as the Golden Eagles could get.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a match at undefeated Cal State San Bernardino.
