Box Score
SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team got a big road victory over the defending California Collegiate Athletic Association champions.
A penalty-kick goal by
Melina Barragan in the 69th minute was the only score of the game in the Golden Eagles' 1-0 victory over San Francisco State Sunday afternoon. Cal State L.A. (6-2-2, 4-2-2 CCAA) extended its unbeaten streak to six games with the victory. The Golden Eagles are 4-0-2 over their last six games after opening conference play with consecutive 1-0 losses.
San Francisco State (6-3-1, 4-3-1) lost for the second straight game.
The game pitted the two participants in last year's CCAA Championship Match. The Golden Eagles and Gators ended the contest in a 1-1 tie, but the Gators won the conference title on penalty kicks, denying Cal State L.A. a second straight conference title.
Cal State L.A. had a 17-12 advantage in shots, including an 11-7 edge in the scoreless first half. The Golden Eagles had a 10-3 advantage after the Gators started the game quickly with four of the first five shots of the contest.
Jessie Walworth made four saves for the Golden Eagles, who were also credited with a team save following a dangerous San Francisco State corner kick that resulted in a shot for Kristen Powers. Walworth made a save on a header shot by Kaitlin Dick in the 83rd minute and the Golden Eagle defense took it from there, holding the Gators without a shot for the remainder of the game.
After a scoreless first half, the Golden Eagles had a pair of chances in a two-minute span about 20 minutes into the second half.
Marissa Pickett had a shot saved by San Francisco State goalkeeper Annica Jones in the 65th minute and
Ayana Younge had a bid stopped by Jones in the 66th minute. Jones finished the game with seven saves.
Cal State L.A. then was awarded a penalty kick in the 69th minute and Barragan made it count for the game's only score.
Younge and
Natalie Martin had three shots each for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a road game at Sonoma State.
