LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team had a successful ending to a seven-match home stand.
The Golden Eagles completed a weekend sweep by beating Cal State East Bay, 25-20, 17-25, 30-28, 25-21, Saturday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (9-9, 6-7 CCAA) won for the third time in its last four matches and completed a season sweep of Cal State East Bay.
The Golden Eagles also climbed into a share of fifth place with the Pioneers (11-7, 6-7 CCAA).
Cal State L.A. had a 58-55 edge in kills and hit at a .226 percentage to .217 for Cal State East Bay. The Golden Eagles also had a 14-10 advantage in blocks. Cal State East Bay had a 9-5 advantage in service aces, but also had eight service errors to only three for the Golden Eagles.
Marquis Mora, who had a career-high 28 kills in a four-set win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, had 17 more kills on Saturday to go along with seven blocks. She hit at a .364 percentage on Saturday and also added four digs.
Kymberly Silveyra added 16 kills, 10 digs and two service aces for the Golden Eagles, while
Natalia Gonzalez had eight kills and three blocks.
Kitona Offord had 17 kills and four blocks for the Pioneers. She hit at a .452 percentage. Nicole Boyle and Morgan Hirzal had nine kills each.
Mary Laupepa had six blocks, two aces and three kills for the Golden Eagles, while
Kaylynne Taeatafa had 43 set assists, seven kills and eight digs.
April Reyes had 14 digs, while
Samantha Potter had 12 digs and three blocks.
The Golden Eagles trailed in the first set, 16-14, before making a strong run behind the serving of Potter to take a 19-16 lead. A kill by Mora, a solo block by Mora, kills by Silveyra and Mora and an attack error accounted for the run. The Golden Eagles got to set point on a kill by Silveyra and then closed out the set on a block by Laupepa and
Chelsea Hamilton.
Cal State East Bay roared back to even the match in the second set. The set was even at 13-13, but the Pioneers went on a 7-0 run behind some strong serving by Danielle Stewart, who had a pair of aces during the run. A kill by Nicole Boyle eventually ended the set.
The third set was the most entertaining of the match. Cal State L.A. had a set point at 24-23 following a block by Mora and Taeatafa, but a kill by Hirzel evened it at 24-24. The Pioneers then had four set points at 25-24, 26-25, 27-26 and 28-27 only to see the Golden Eagles fight them off on a kill by Gonzalez, a kill by Silveyra, a kill by Taeatafa and another kill by Silveyra. Cal State L.A. then grabbed a 29-28 advantage on an attack error and won the set on a block by Potter and Laupepa.
Cal State L.A. then broke an 18-18 tie in the fourth set to close out the match. A kill by Hamilton and a block by Laupepa and Gonzalez gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. A kill by Gonzalez made it 23-20 and a kill by Mora got the Golden Eagles to match point at 24-20. A kill by Allen saved one match point, but another kill by Mora ended the match.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a match at UC San Diego.
