LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team got an unbelievable performance from
Marquis Mora and fought off a stern challenge from Cal State Monterey Bay Friday night in the Eagles Nest.
Mora had a career-high 28 kills and a hitting percentage of .765 to lead the Golden Eagles past the Otters, 31-29, 25-21, 24-26, 25-19, Friday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match. Cal State L.A. (8-9, 5-7 CCAA) won for the second time in three matches.
It was thanks to Mora that they succeeded even after Cal State Monterey Bay (6-9, 3-9 CCAA) fought off a pair of match points in the third set to extend the match. Cal State L.A. responded in the fourth set by hitting .400 to put the match away.
Cal State L.A. hit at a .260 clip to a .179 percentage for the Otters. The Golden Eagles had a 63-55 edge in kills and a 12-9 advantage in blocks. Both teams had four service aces and Cal State L.A. had 58 digs to 50 for the Otters.
The story of the match was Mora, the Golden Eagles' junior middle blocker. She had 28 kills in 34 swings with only two errors. She also had seven blocks for a total of 32.5 points in the contest. She also had four digs.
Her previous career high was 22 kills in a match set last season.
The 28 kills are tied for eighth all-time in a single match for Cal State L.A. The program record is 44.
Kymberly Silveyra had a strong match as well and contributed 11 kills and 12 digs, including a sensational diving save to prolong a rally eventually won by the Golden Eagles.
Rheann Fall had 18 kills and four blocks for the Otters, while Melanie Lashbrook had 16 kills and five blocks.
Kaylynne Taeatafa had 45 set assists and 10 digs and
April Reyes had a team-high 16 digs.
The tone was set for an exciting match in the very first set, which went all the way to 31-29 before it was decided. Mora had seven kills in nine swings in the set. The Otters had set points at 24-23, 25-24, 26-25 and 28-27 all spoiled by kills by Mora. The Golden Eagles eventually took a 29-28, only to have a service error tie things up again at 29-29. Back-to-back kills by Silveyra finally gave the set to the Golden Eagles.
Mora had five more kills in the second set. Cal State L.A. jumped out to an 8-3 lead, only to see Cal State Monterey Bay fight back and take a 13-12 lead. A kill by Mora and a block by Mora and
Samantha Potter broke a 14-14 tie and gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. A kill by Potter and an attack error got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-20 and, after a kill by Lashbrook extended the set, a kill by Mora ended it.
Mora had eight more kills in nine attacks in the third set, but the Otters fought off a pair of match points to stay in it. The Golden Eagles led 24-22 after a kill by Silveyra, but the Otters got kills from Fall and Julia Ashen and a pair of attack errors by the Golden Eagles to extend the match.
Mora, though, had eight more kills in nine attacks again to help end the contest. Cal State L.A. jumped out to a 15-9 lead and held off the Otters. Cal State Monterey Bay closed to within 16-14, but the Golden Eagles got a pair of kills from
Chelsea Hamilton and kills from
Natalia Gonzalez and Mora to open up a 22-16 lead. Two straight kills by Mora got the Golden Eagles to match point at 24-17 and, after kills by Lashbrook and Fall kept the Otters in it, a kill by Mora ended the contest.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a home match against Cal State East Bay.
