No. 13 Golden Eagles Jump Out Quickly And Beat UC San Diego

LA JOLLA – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team scored the first three goals of the game and picked up an important California Collegiate Athletic Association road victory Friday over UC San Diego.
 
The Golden Eagles got goals from four different players and beat the Tritons, 4-2, Friday at Triton Soccer Stadium. Cal State L.A. (8-1-4, 6-1-4), ranked 13th in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, was able to keep pace in a tight CCAA South Division race.
 
The Golden Eagles remain in a tie for second with Cal State Dominguez Hills, three points behind first-place Cal Poly Pomona. Cal State L.A. stretched its unbeaten streak to five games by beating UC San Diego (6-7, 5-6 CCAA) for the second time this season. Cal State L.A. won the first meeting, 1-0, in Los Angeles on Sept. 9.
 
There was a lot more scoring in the second meeting. The Golden Eagles got goals from Timo Schwar, Antti Arvola, Marvin Sandoval and Jordan Payne to beat the Tritons. Cal State L.A. scored the first three goals of the game, led 3-1 at halftime and then added its final goal to make it 4-1 midway through the second half.
 
Waleed Cassis made two saves in goal for the Golden Eagles.
 
UC San Diego got goals from Andisheh Bagheri and Tsuk Haroush and six saves from goalkeeper Jesse Brennan.
 
Cal State L.A. had a 16-13 advantage in shots, including a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. UC San Diego had an 8-3 advantage in shots. The four goals are the most allowed in a game by the Tritons this season.
 
The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Schwar recorded his fifth goal of the season. Jason Swope got the assist, his fifth of the season, when he got behind the UC San Diego defense and sent a cross to Schwar, who slotted it under the goalkeeper for the score.
 
Cal State L.A. struck again in the 15th minute when Arvola scored his fifth goal of the season. Cassis punted the ball near midfield, where Schwar flicked it to Arvola, who went in on a breakaway.
 
Sandoval then made it 3-0 in the 34th minute when he received a pass from Rosario Bras and knocked in a shot from about 12 yards out.
 
UC San Diego fought back and made it 3-1 before halftime when Bagheri volleyed a bouncing ball off the far post and in for his first goal of the season.
 
Cal State L.A. extended its lead to 4-1 in the 67th minute when Payne scored his second goal of the season. He received a pass from Nicolas Assad and scored from about 26 yards out.
 
UC San Diego completed the scoring when Haroush hit a one-timer off a pass from Bagheri for his first goal of the season.
 
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a road match at Cal State San Bernardino.
