LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team endured another frustrating night in the Eagles Nest.
After putting forth a solid effort to tie Saturday's match with San Francisco State, the Golden Eagles came up short in the end, 25-22, 16-25, 25-19, 25-20 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest. Cal State L.A. (6-8, 3-6 CCAA) dropped its second consecutive match after beginning the week with a win over Cal State Dominguez Hills.
San Francisco State (9-5, 5-4 CCAA) won its fifth straight match.
Natalia Gonzalez had a match-high 16 kills, while
Marquis Mora had 14 kills and six blocks for the Golden Eagles.
Halimah Oswald had 13 kills and two blocks to lead the Gators. Katie Judd had seven kills.
The Golden Eagles had a 49-45 edge in kills and hit at a .194 percentage to .179 for the Gators. Cal State L.A. also had a 10-5 advantage in blocks. San Francisco State, though, had the edge in service aces, 9-5.
Reanna Hill added six kills and five blocks for the Golden Eagles, while
April Reyes had a match-high 17 digs.
Kaylynne Taeatafa had 26 set assists and 11 digs.
The Golden Eagles started well in the first set and held a 15-11 lead after a kill by
Chelsea Hamilton. The Gators, though, behind the serving of Megan Johnson and Kelly Ostello, went on a 11-2 run to grab a 22-17 lead. The Gators reached set point at 24-19 after a kill by Johnson. The Golden Eagles scored the next three points on a service error, a kill by
Mary Laupepa and an ace from
Kymberly Silveyra to make it 24-22, but an attack error by the Golden Eagles ended the set.
Cal State L.A. put things together in the second set and led from start to finish. A strong serving run by Taeatafa enabled the Golden Eagles to open up a 22-14 lead. A kill by Gonzalez made it 23-15, an ace by Gonzalez got the Golden Eagles to set point and a kill by Hill ended the set.
The Golden Eagles, though, were unable to sustain their momentum and faltered late in the final two sets. Cal State L.A. led early and was even at 15-15 in the third set before the Gators went on a 10-4 run to close it out. Iris Tolenada's service ace ended the set.
In the fourth set, Cal State L.A. held a 16-13 lead after a Mora kill, but the Gators took advantage of a service error and embarked on a 6-0 run that gave them the lead for good.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a home match against Cal State Stanislaus.
