LA JOLLA – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team got its California Collegiate Athletic Association title defense off to a strong start.
The Golden Eagles got three consecutive second-half goals to break a 0-0 halftime tie and went on to beat No. 6 UC San Diego, 3-1, Friday at Triton Soccer Field. Cal State L.A. (2-0, 1-0 CCAA) got goals from
Ann Marie Tangorra,
Alex Conley and
Gabbi Segall and a pair of assists from
Marissa Pickett to beat the Tritons for the third consecutive time.
Cal State L.A., ranked 23
rd in the country, also got four saves from
Jessie Walworth.
UC San Diego (2-1, 0-1 CCAA) got a goal in the 81st minute from Alyssa Newcomer and two saves from goalkeeper Kristin Armstrong.
For the second straight game, the Golden Eagles scored three goals against an opponent who hadn't surrendered a goal entering the contest. In their season opener last Saturday, California Baptist came in with a pair of shutout victories and fell to the Golden Eagles, 3-1. On Friday, UC San Diego came in with an unblemished record after a 6-0 win over Dominican and a 2-0 victory over Notre Dame de Namur.
Cal State L.A. held a 15-14 edge in shots. UC San Diego had a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Golden Eagles had an 8-3 advantage in shots in the opening half, but only one attempt was on net.
Tangorra, who had two goals in the Golden Eagles' opener against California Baptist, broke the scoreless tie just 4:43 into the second half. She got space on the right side atop the box and rifled a high shot that went off the goalkeeper's hands and into the goal.
Conley then made it 2-0 in the 73rd minute. After passes by Segall and Pickett, Conley was open on the left side and sent a perfect shot into the low right corner of the net.
Cal State L.A. took a 3-0 lead less than four minutes later when Segall scored her first goal of the season with an assist from Pickett. Segall came charging into the box and shot past a diving goalkeeper.
UC San Diego scored off a corner kick from Haley Johnson in the 81st minute. Newcomer was able to head it over Walworth for her second goal of the season.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a match at Cal State East Bay.
