Golden Eagles Can't Shake Lengthy Run By Tritons

LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team was on the wrong end of a lengthy, game-breaking run Saturday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest against UC San Diego.

The Golden Eagles were tied with the conference leaders with five minutes left in the first half, but surrendered the next 28 points and lost to the Tritons, 75-43, Saturday in RIMAC Arena. Cal State L.A. (4-17, 2-14 CCAA) went nearly 11 minutes without scoring while losing for the second time this season to first-place UC San Diego (19-1, 14-1 CCAA). Cal State L.A. has now lost six consecutive games.

UC San Diego scored the final 10 points of the first half to take a 29-19 halftime lead and then added the first 18 points of the second half to break the game open.

Cal State L.A. shot just 36.2 percent for the game and committed 26 turnovers. UC San Diego shot 46.4 percent and committed only 17 turnovers. The Tritons also owned a 43-31 rebounding edge.

Jazzi Johnson led the Golden Eagles once again with 16 points and four rebounds. Sonia Miller had nine points and two assists and Stacie Whitley had six points and eight rebounds.

Chelsea Carlisle had 19 points and four rebounds for UC San Diego, while Tiffany Hunter had 11 points and six rebounds. The Tritons, after shooting 34.6 percent in the first half, made 56.7 percent of their shots in the second half. UC San Diego was also 10-of-28 from behind the 3-point arc, while Cal State L.A. was just 1-of-10.

Cal State L.A. gave UC San Diego fits in the team's first meeting and lost a hard-fought decision, 65-61, on Jan. 2 in Los Angeles. For the first 15 minutes on Saturday, the Golden Eagles were right there with the Tritons once again. Miller scored the first four points of the game to give Cal State L.A. a quick 4-0 lead and Miller's 3-pointer brought the Golden Eagles into a 19-19 tie with 5:04 remaining in the first half.

That's when everything fell apart for the Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A. didn't score again until there was 14:22 left in the game. Danielle Snyder scored on a layup with an assist from Miller to stop UC San Diego's 28-0 run. The Tritons kept on building their lead and took their biggest advantage of the game, 63-26, completing a 44-7 stretch.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a road game against San Francisco State.
