SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team put together a great second half performance Friday, but came up just short of a California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.
The Golden Eagles stormed back from a 15-point halftime deficit, closing the gap to one point, before falling to San Francisco State, 49-47, Friday night in Main Gymnasium. Cal State L.A. (4-18, 2-15 CCAA) lost its seventh straight game, but the Golden Eagles staged one of its best comebacks of the season.
After falling behind, 28-13, at halftime, Cal State L.A. turned up its defensive pressure and allowed only two second-half baskets by the Gators (12-13, 8-9 CCAA). The Gators were just 2-of-19 from the floor in the final 20 minutes, but still hung on for the win.
The Golden Eagles shot 47.8 percent in the second half, making 11-of-23 attempts. Cal State L.A. shot 37 percent for the game, while San Francisco State shot 30.2 percent. The Gators, though, were 23-of-36 from the free-throw line, including 17-of-26 in the second half, while the Golden Eagles were just 11-of-23 for the game, all of those attempts in the second period.
Cal State L.A. got the deficit down to one point, 47-46, with 40 seconds left, but three missed free throws down the stretch proved costly.
Jazzi Johnson had nine points, six rebounds and three assists, while
Sonia Miller had eight points, five rebounds and two assists.
Stacie Whitley added eight points, three rebounds and two assists, while
Brionna Baker had seven points and two rebounds.
Donisha Tate had 17 points and 17 rebounds to lead San Francisco State, while Nicole Hicks had 12 points and four rebounds.
A basket by
Jordan Kuzma gave the Golden Eagles a 9-7 lead with 11:30 left in the first half, but the Golden Eagles were outscored, 21-4, over the remainder of the half and trailed at halftime, 28-13. San Francisco State scored the final 14 points of the first half after a basket by Whitley with 7:26 left in the period.
Cal State L.A. committed 17 of their 27 turnovers in the first half.
The Golden Eagles turned things around in the second half and nearly pulled off a dramatic come-from-behind win. Cal State L.A. trailed, 45-35, with 3:18 to go, but went on an 11-2 run to get close. A basket by Baker started the run, which also included a layup by Miller, two free throws by
Jameiz Terrell, a free throw by Baker, two free throws by Johnson and ended with a tip-in by Baker that made it 47-46, with 40 seconds left.
After San Francisco State got a pair of free throws, Miller made one of two free throws to make it 49-47. A late turnover and foul put the Golden Eagles at the lane with one second left remaining. Johnson rebounded the second miss, but the buzzer sounded before she could get off a shot.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a game at Cal State Monterey Bay.
