Golden Eagles Suffer First Loss On A Last-Second Rebound

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team found itself on the wrong side of a buzzer-beater Friday night in its California Collegiate Athletic Association game against Cal State San Bernardino.
 
After Lacy Ramon hit two free throws to tie it with 10 seconds left, Cal State San Bernardino's Eisha Sheppard collected an offensive rebound and put it back in with 2.6 seconds left to give the Coyotes a 60-58 win over the Golden Eagles Friday in the Eagles Nest.
 
Cal State L.A. (3-1, 1-1 CCAA) lost for the first time this season, while Cal State San Bernardino (4-0, 1-0 CCAA) remained unbeaten.
 
It was the second straight season Cal State San Bernardino beat Cal State L.A. with a late shot. Last season, the Coyotes got a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer to prevail, 60-59.
 
Cal State L.A. shot 47.8 percent for the game, including 50 percent in the second half, but the Golden Eagles had difficulty on boards, where Cal State San Bernardino grabbed 12 offensive rebounds on its way to a 31-26 advantage in that category. The Golden Eagles were 9-of-13 from the free-throw line, while the Coyotes were just 2-of-6.
 
The Golden Eagles, who set a new program record with 13 made 3-pointers in their last game, were only 5-of-18 on Friday. The Coyotes were 8-of-22 from behind the arc.
 
Ramon had 15 points, two rebounds and four assists for the Golden Eagles, while Shatori Dearman had 15 points and six rebounds. Gretchen Tiernan had 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
 
Sheppard had 15 points, four rebounds and four assists for the Coyotes. Sabrina Gonzalez had 13 points and seven assists, while Danielle Shows had 12 points and seven rebounds.
 
The game was an entertaining one from start to finish and neither team was able to build a double-digit lead. Cal State San Bernardino led by as many as eight points in the first half, although the Golden Eagles got a late 3-pointer by Erika Ruiz and a basket by Brionna Baker to trim the halftime deficit to 32-29.
 
The Golden Eagles opened the second half with a 10-2 run to take their biggest lead of the game, 39-34. A 3-pointer by Ramon tied it at 34-34, a layup by Dearman gave the Golden Eagles a 36-34 lead and a 3-pointer by Baker made it 39-34 with 15:27 to go.
 
The Coyotes opened up a four-point lead, 56-52, after a pair of free throws by Sheppard with 3:50 remaining, but baskets by Ruiz and Ramon tied it with 2:29 remaining. An offensive basket and rebound by Shows gave the Coyotes a 58-56 lead with 19 seconds left, but Ramon was fouled inside and made both free throws to tie it with 10 seconds left.
 
Ramon blocked a shot by Shows with time running out, but Sheppard quickly grabbed the rebound and got the game-winning basket.
 
Cal State L.A. will return to action with a home game against Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday night.
