Golden Eagles Record Tough CCAA Win Over Dominguez Hills

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team completed a season sweep of travel partner Cal State Dominguez Hills Sunday and the second win was much more of a struggle than the first.

The Golden Eagles came up with some big performances down the stretch and beat the Toros, 62-56, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (4-2, 2-2 CCAA) evened its conference mark with its second victory over the Toros (0-7, 0-4 CCAA) this season.

In the first meeting, Cal State L.A. set a new program record with 13 made 3-pointers on its way to a 75-62 win in Carson. On Sunday, the Golden Eagles were only 1-of-14 from behind the arc against a determined Cal State Dominguez Hills defensive effort and needed some late heroics to seal the victory.

Cal State L.A.'s defense, though, limited Cal State Dominguez Hills to just 28.1 percent shooting and the Toros were successful on only 4-of-19 attempts from behind the arc.

Overall, the Golden Eagles shot 43.8 percent and made half of their 18 field-goal attempts in the second half. The Toros were only 7-of-32 in the second half.

Lacy Ramon had 18 points, six rebounds and six steals to lead three Golden Eagles in double figures. Shatori Dearman had 12 points and eight rebounds, while Alisha Belt had 11 points, four rebounds and two assists.

Tiffany Smith had 14 points and five rebounds for the Toros, while Ashley Hudson had 12 points and eight rebounds. Nikki Boutte had 11 points and Hillarie Grant finished with 10 points, giving the Toros four players who reached double figures in scoring.

The Golden Eagles led for most of the game, but were never able to get a comfortable advantage against the Toros. Cal State L.A.'s biggest lead came at 19-10, but the Toros wiped that out and tied things up at 26-26 after a 3-pointer by Boutte.

The Golden Eagles regained the lead after two free throws by Ramon and a layup by Sonia Miller, only to see the Toros tie it again at 30-30 after back-to-back baskets by Smith.

A three-point play by Belt lifted the Golden Eagles to a 33-30 halftime lead.

A 3-pointer by Boutte gave the Toros their first lead of the game at 35-33 and Cal State Dominguez Hills took its biggest lead of the game at 39-36 after a pair of free throws by Sherrie Hughes. Cal State L.A. took the lead back after consecutive baskets by Ramon, Erika Ruiz and Belt.

A rebound basket by Belt gave the Golden Eagles a 48-43 lead with 8:27 to go, but the Toros got three free throws by Smith and two more by Hudson to tie it again at 48-48 with 7:39 remaining.

Cal State L.A. then scored the next six points to take the lead for good. Ramon hit two free throws to give the Golden Eagles the lead and Ruiz scored on a layup and Dearman hit two free throws to make it 56-50.

The Toros pulled to within two points at 56-54 after a rebound basket by Hughes with 2:35 to go, but Ramon scored on a layup and Gretchen Tiernan hit two free throws to make it 60-54 with 31 seconds remaining.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday in the first day of the CCAA/GNAC Classic when the Golden Eagles will face Northwest Nazarene at 7:30 p.m.
