Golden Eagles Take Over CCAA South Lead With Shutout Win

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team used its seventh shutout of the season to take over the California Collegiate Athletic Association South Division lead.
 
The Golden Eagles scored a pair of goals in each half and shut down Cal State East Bay in a 4-0 victory Friday at Jesse Owens Stadium in the Billie Jean King Sports Complex. Cal State L.A. (7-3, 6-3 CCAA) took over the CCAA South Division lead by one point over Cal State Dominguez Hills and two points over Cal State San Bernardino.
 
Taylor Rivas, Erik Vargas, David Hauser and Gonzalo Pulgar scored goals for the Golden Eagles, while Thaddeus Caraway made three saves in goal for his second shutout of the season.
 
Bryce Bookhamer and Patrick Gilbertson combined to make seven saves for Cal State East Bay.
 
All 10 Cal State L.A. games have ended in shutouts this season – seven in wins and three in defeats.
 
Rivas opened the scoring just 4:15 into the game off a corner kick by Marvin Sandoval. Tyler Coombs was able to deflect the ball into the box to Rivas, who headed it in for his third goal of the season.
 
Vargas scored his first goal of the season just six minutes later. He turned around in the box and sent a quick shot just inside the far post.
 
Cal State East Bay had its best chance of the half when Michael Dowson sent a shot toward the post that Caraway was able to deflect away for a corner kick.
 
Hauser, just returning to action after missing the past eight games, made his presence felt with three shots in the game, including a blistering strike just inside the near post that made it 3-0 in the 53rd minute of play.
 
Pulgar finished the scoring when he got a pass from Vargas and placed a shot inside the far post for his second goal of the season.
 
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a game at 11:30 a.m. against UC San Diego.
