CHICO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team used another strong defensive showing and timely goals from
Liz Franco to post a big California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Chico State.
Franco scored both goals -- one in each half -- to lead the Golden Eagles to a 2-0 win over Wildcats Sunday at University Soccer Stadium. Cal State L.A. (7-2, 6-2 CCAA) takes over the CCAA South Division lead with the victory. The Golden Eagles and North Division leader Cal State Stanislaus have identical records in conference play.
Cal State L.A. defeated Cal State Stanislaus, 2-1, on Friday to start the weekend. The Golden Eagles have won three games in a row.
The Golden Eagles turned in another outstanding defensive performance. In its last three games, Cal State L.A. has allowed only one goal -- on a penalty kick Friday at Cal State Stanislaus.
Gabriella Batmani made two saves to record the shutout. Both saves came in the second half.
Cal State L.A. enjoyed an 11-5 edge in shots and had the only two corner kicks in the game.
Franco gave the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when she drilled a shot from about 15 yards out under the crossbar for her seventh goal of the season.
That's where the score stood until the 87th minute when Franco struck again.
Alex Conley and
Ann Marie Tangorra had the assists, setting up Franco from about 10 yards away, where she struck a shot just inside the near post for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Cal State L.A.'s defense took it from there. The Golden Eagles had six shots on goal for the game and permitted only two Chico State shots to reach Batmani.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a home match against Cal State East Bay.
