SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team put up a better battle this time around, but the result was the same -- a loss to the California Collegiate Athletic Association leaders.
The Golden Eagles hung tough in all three sets before faltering late in a 25-17, 25-18, 25-19 loss to Cal State San Bernardino Saturday night in Coussoulis Arena. Cal State L.A. (11-8, 8-7 CCAA), which beat Cal Poly Pomona in a five-set match on Thursday, was forced to settle for a weekend split.
Zuzana Cizova had 10 kills and nine digs to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Marquis Mora had six kills and five blocks. Jane Chafeh had a huge match for Cal State San Bernardino (18-2, 14-1 CCAA), pounding down 17 kills. Samantha Middleborn had six kills and nine blocks.
Cal State L.A. was limited to just a .043 hitting percentage and that percentage was even lower in the first two sets. The Golden Eagles hit at a .207 clip in the final set. Cal State San Bernardino hit at a .247 percentage for the match, including .357 in the third set.
Cal State San Bernardino had a 40-27 edge in kills and a 12-7 advantage in blocks.
The Golden Eagles held an early 3-1 lead in the opening set and still trailed by only 15-14 after a kill by Cizova. Cal State L.A. still trailed by just one point, 17-16, but Cal State San Bernardino scored the next seven points to get to set point. A kill by
Natalia Gonzalez saved the first set point, but a kill by Chafeh ended the frame.
Cal State L.A. dropped the first four points of the second set, but rallied to take an 8-7 lead after a block by
Mary Laupepa and Cizova and a 9-8 lead after a service error. The Coyotes, though, scored the next four points and never trailed again. A kill by Middlebrook got the Coyotes to set point and she ended it with an ace.
The Golden Eagles battled back from an early 10-7 deficit in the third set and eventually took a 16-15 lead on a kill by Cizova. Another kill by Cizova tied things up at 17-17, but the Coyotes closed out the match with an 8-2 run.
Cal State L.A. will return to action with a home match against San Francisco State next Friday night.
