LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team got goals from four different players and picked up an important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.
The Golden Eagles got goals from
Liz Franco,
Stacey Rodwell,
Alex Conley and
Ann Marie Tangorra and beat Cal State Dominguez Hills, 4-1, Wednesday at Jesse Owens Stadium in the Billie Jean King Sports Complex. Cal State L.A. (11-3, 10-3 CCAA) stretched its lead in the CCAA South Division to four points over second-place UC San Diego.
The Golden Eagles also now have a five-point lead over third-place Cal State Dominguez Hills (10-4-1, 8-4-1 CCAA). Cal State L.A. has a conference-best 30 points with three conference matches remaining.
The game was played in soggy conditions after the recent rains, but Cal State L.A. was able to get its offense untracked early. The Golden Eagles stormed out to a 3-0 lead in the first 25 minutes of play and never looked back.
Cal State L.A. had an 18-12 advantage in shots, while both teams had three corner kicks.
Gabriella Batmani made three saves in goal for the Golden Eagles, while Alyssa Congdon made four saves for the Toros.
Franco opened the scoring just 1:36 into the game. Her initial shot was saved by Congdon, but Rodwell sent the rebound back to Franco, who lofted a shot into an empty net for her ninth goal of the season.
Tangorra then set up the second goal when she was pulled down in the box by a Toro defender for a penalty kick in the fifth minute. Rodwell took the kick and converted for her third goal of the season.
Tangorra was also involved in the Golden Eagles' third goal, making a nice run down the left side of the field and centering the ball to Conley, who didn't miss with her shot inside the near post. It was the third goal of the season for Conley.
The Toros got their lone goal in the 32nd minute as the result of a penalty kick to make it 3-1. Batmani was able to save the penalty shot by Jessica Murphy, but Taylor Canatsey got to the rebound first and knocked it in for her ninth goal of the season.
Cal State L.A. got the only goal of the second half in the 82
nd minute when Tangorra got her 10
th goal of the season. Franco got the ball to
Lisa Ohberg, who sent a perfect pass in to Tangorra. She got there just ahead of Congdon and her partially deflected shot trickled into the goal to complete the scoring.
Cal State L.A. will face Cal State Dominguez Hills again on Saturday in Carson.
