LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team bounced back from its disappointing loss to UC San Diego on Sunday with an important California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Sonoma State on Friday.
The Golden Eagles got a second-half goal from
Amanda Taylor and made it stand up for a 1-0 win Friday night at Jesse Owens Stadium in the Billie Jean King Sports Complex. Cal State L.A. (9-3, 8-3 CCAA) maintained its lead in the CCAA South Division with its fourth victory in its last five matches.
The only goal of the game came off a corner kick in the 57
th minute. Cal State L.A.'s
Liz Franco sent the kick into the box and Taylor, close to the net, was able to knock it into the goal for her first goal of the season.
The assist was Franco's fifth of the season.
Cal State L.A. had a decided advantage in possession, but Sonoma State hung tough and was able to stay in the contest. The Golden Eagles had a 25-6 advantage in shots and a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.
Cal State L.A. recorded its sixth shutout of the season and its third in the past four games.
Gabriella Batmani made four saves for Cal State L.A., while Alexis Sciacqua made nine saves for the Seawolves (2-7-3, 1-7-3 CCAA).
Ann Marie Tangorra took a match-high seven shots for the Golden Eagles, while Franco had five shots.
Cal State L.A. will return to action with a home game on Sunday against Humboldt State.
