LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team came up short in its bid for a second straight season sweep against one of the California Collegiate Athletic Association's perennial powers.
UC San Diego got a goal late in the first half and made it stand up for a 1-0 win over the Golden Eagles Sunday at Jesse Owens Stadium in the Billie Jean King Sports Complex. Cal State L.A. (8-3, 7-3 CCAA) had a four-match winning streak snapped and saw its CCAA South Division lead cut to just one point over UC San Diego (8-2-2, 6-2-2 CCAA).
The Golden Eagles had posted a 3-1 win over the Tritons in the conference opener for both schools in La Jolla on Sept. 10. This time, though, the Golden Eagles had trouble breaking through against UC San Diego's defense. Cal State L.A. was shut out for the first time this season.
The lone goal of the game came in the 32nd minute when UC San Diego's Anne Wethe drilled a shot from about 25 yards out in the middle of the field to the upper right corner of the goal.
Kristin Armstrong made five saves for UC San Diego, while
Gabriella Batmani made three saves for Cal State L.A.
The Golden Eagles' best scoring chance in the first half came in the 36
th minute when a bouncing ball kicked by
Ayana Young just eluded a diving
Gabbi Segall, who was attempting to head the ball into the net. The ball, though, went through, bounced up and hit the crossbar before bounding away.
The Golden Eagles also hit the crossbar in the second half when a bid by
Ann Marie Tangorra was just tipped by Armstrong off the crossbar and over. The Golden Eagles earned a corner kick, but could not score.
Cal State L.A. had a 10-6 advantage in shots, including a 5-1 edge in the second half. The Golden Eagles also had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks, all of them coming in the second half.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a home match against Sonoma State.
