Golden Eagles Come Up Short At Home Against Sonoma State

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team got off to a quick start, but Sonoma State made sure the Golden Eagles didn't enjoy the finish.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead, but the Seawolves shut the door after that and Cal State L.A. dropped a 52-36 decision Friday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (4-14, 2-11 CCAA) has now lost three straight games since knocking off Chico State last Friday.

Cal State L.A. shot just 24 percent for the game. The Golden Eagles battled on the boards, falling in that department by a close 44-42 count and Cal State L.A. played well defensively, holding Sonoma State (9-9, 7-6 CCAA) to just 30 percent shooting.

The Seawolves' defense, though, was the story of the game, limiting the Golden Eagles to just 4-of-23 shooting from behind the 3-point arc, including 1-of-11 in the second half.

The Golden Eagles also made only 10-of-20 free-throw attempts, while Sonoma State was 13-of-20.

Jazzi Johnson had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Jameiz Terrell had nine points and four rebounds. Jordan Kuzma had 11 rebounds and four blocks.

Taylor Vigil had a game-high 15 points for the Seawolves, while Jaclyn Bisordi had 13 points, including nine on three 3-pointers.

A pair of 3-pointers by Terrell staked the Golden Eagles to a 6-0 lead, but Sonoma State battled back to even things at 6-6 with 12:28 still remaining in the half. Cal State L.A. regained the lead on a basket by Johnson and took a 9-6 advantage after Kuzma hit one of two free throws.

Bisordi, though, countered with back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Seawolves a 12-9 lead and Sonoma State never looked back. The Seawolves pushed the lead to seven points, saw it cut to four points after a 3-pointer by Brionna Baker, and settled for a 20-14 halftime lead.

Cal State L.A. got as close as three points, 27-24, after Terrell hit all three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt with 15:39, but that was as close as the Golden Eagles could get. Cal State L.A. was still within striking distance, trailing 40-32 after a 3-pointer by Kelli McClintick with 8:36 to play, but Sonoma State scored the next six points and led by double-digit margins the rest of the way.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Humboldt State.
