Golden Eagles Suffer Yet Another Tough Defeat

Box Score

SEASIDE -- Something about Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team and extra periods at Cal State Monterey Bay seem to go hand-in-hand.

A year after a triple-overtime thriller in the Otter Sports Center, Cal State L.A. and Cal State Monterey Bay hooked up in another nail-biter, this one going to the Otters, 66-63, in overtime in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game on Saturday night. Cal State L.A. (10-13, 5-11 CCAA) dropped its seventh straight game and its second consecutive heartbreaker. The Golden Eagles fell to San Francisco State by two points on Friday night.

Cal State L.A. remained without injured leading scorer Chris Fields.

The Golden Eagles led by as many as eight points in the second half before falling behind by six points, 55-49, with 1:51 to go. A 3-pointer by Dwayne Jones sliced the deficit to three points and a three-point play by Donte Bell with 32 seconds remaining sent the game into overtime.

In a see-saw overtime period, the Golden Eagles took a 61-59 lead after back-to-back layups by Christofer Hart. A 3-pointer by Stephen Becker put the Otters ahead, 62-61, with 1:29 to go, but Leland Jones gave Cal State L.A. its final lead at 63-62 after a basket with one minute to go. A layup by Keith Wilson with 27 seconds left was the game-winner for the Otters (14-9, 8-8 CCAA).

Jones missed a 3-pointer with 10 seconds remaining and, after Wilson hit two free throws, Hart missed a 3-pointer with two seconds to go.

Dwayne Jones had a team-high 18 points, while Leland Jones had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Hart also had 11 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists. Tyler Polo had eight points, two rebounds and two assists.

Dante Green led three Otters in double figures with 17 points. Wilson had 14 points and Joe Mitchell had 12 points and 11 rebounds.

The game was a defensive struggle in the first half with Cal State L.A. holding a 19-17 halftime lead. The Golden Eagles shot just 31 percent in the first half, while Cal State Monterey Bay made just 24 percent. Both teams picked it up in the second half with Cal State L.A. shooting 43 percent, including 50 percent from 3-point range.

Cal State Monterey Bay had a 42-33 rebounding edge.

Points were hard to come by in the first half. Baskets by Leland Jones and Polo broke a 15-15 tie and the Golden Eagles settled for a 19-17 halftime lead.

A layup by Polo gave the Golden Eagles a 45-38 lead and a free throw by Bell made it 46-38 with 9:21 remaining. A three-point play by Leland Jones stopped a Cal State Monterey Bay rally and boosted the Golden Eagle lead to 49-43 with 6:35 to go, but the Otters scored 12 straight points to take a 55-49 lead with 1:51 left. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Stephen Becker and Wilson broke a 49-49 tie.

Dwayne Jones hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit in half and, after a missed free throw by the Otters and rebound by Leland Jones, Bell made a layup and was fouled and his free throw tied the game at 55-55 and sent the game into overtime.

Cal State L.A. had won a triple-overtime contest in Seaside last season, 126-122.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday night with a home game against Chico State.
