The Golden Eagles' defense took it from there. Both teams had five shots in the opening half and Cal State L.A. started the second half with some scoring chances as Kristian Gaustad had a shot saved by Vanguard goalie Trevor Herrera and, after a corner kick by Rufino Franco, had another attempt go wide. Derrek Horn had a shot a few minutes later that was saved by Herrera.
