SAN MARCOS – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team was golden in its season opener against Cal State San Marcos on Friday.
The Golden Eagles got quite a debut by junior newcomer
Mickey Daly, who scored the game-winning goal less than two minutes into overtime to lift Cal State L.A. to a 2-1 victory in its 2008 season opener. Daly also added an assist on the Golden Eagles' other goal.
The Golden Eagles enjoyed an 11-7 advantage in shots and used a stifling defense to limit Cal State San Marcos to only a couple scoring opportunities.
Tobias Hummel made one save for the Golden Eagles in goal to record the win. There were only five shots on goal combined by both teams.
After a scoreless first half, the Golden Eagles struck first about 11 minutes into the second period. A corner kick by
Kristian Gaustad started the scoring play. Daly was there to volley it toward the goal and a diving header by
Kyle Hewitt gave the Golden Eagles a picturesque 1-0 lead.
The Cougars, though, picked up the tying goal in the 76th minute on an unassisted goal by Troy Skomra.
The score remained at 1-1 until early in the overtime period.
Mauricio Barrett, who entered the game in overtime, made his presence felt in a hurry as his free kick set up Daly, who knocked in the game-winner.
Cal State L.A. (1-0) will return to action next Friday with a game against Vanguard University.
