LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team took advantage of its biggest offensive output of the season and rolled to another important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.
The Golden Eagles erupted for four first-half goals and went on to a 7-1 win over Cal State Stanislaus Sunday at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (9-1-1, 6-1-1), ranked 11th in the nation, had seven different players score goals.
After the Warriors tied the game at 1-1 in the 14th minute, the Golden Eagles scored three goals in a 13-minute span to take control and broke the game open with two more goals in the first minute of the second half.
Noe David had four saves for Cal State L.A., while Javier Rosales had 10 saves for Cal State Stanislaus, including a diving stop of a penalty kick by Cino and diving efforts to stop chances by
David Mora and Gaustad.
Hansen got the ball rolling for the Golden Eagles. After
Mickey Daly headed the ball toward the Warrior goal, Hansen was able to knock a rebound past the goal-line to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead in the 12
th minute. It was Hansen's second goal of the season.
The Warriors got the equalizer less than two minutes later when David slipped near the goal and Johnson was there to kick the ball into an empty net.
Cal State L.A., though, took the lead for good when Hewitt scored after he received a perfectly-lofted pass from Gaustad behind the Warrior defense in the 25th minute. It was the second goal of the season for Hewitt.
Gomez made it 3-1 about 12 minutes later when he got to a loose ball after a Cino shot and tapped it into an empty net. It was Gomez' first goal of the season. Then, three minutes later, Cucue made it 4-1 when he eluded Rosales and knocked a shot into the net for his second goal of the weekend. He had the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Chico State on Friday.
Gaustad then made it 5-1 just 14 seconds into the second half when he stole a clearing attempt, when in alone, and shot into the upper corner of the net for his third goal of the season. Then, just 41 seconds later, Gaustad got the ball to
Rufino Franco, who sent in a crossing pass that Cino kicked into the left-corner of the net.
The final goal came after a long punt by David, the Cal State L.A. goalie that bounced to Lopez, who beat the Cal State Stanislaus defenders to the ball and scored his first goal of the season.
Cal State L.A. will return to action at Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday.
