CHICO -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team enjoyed another fantastic finish Sunday in California Collegiate Athletic Association action.
Kyle Hewitt scored the game-winning goal with just eight seconds remaining to lift the Golden Eagles past Chico State, 2-1, Sunday at Chico State's University Soccer Stadium. Cal State L.A. (9-2-2, 7-1 CCAA) won its seventh straight conference match and extended its lead in the CCAA South Division to six points. The Golden Eagles are also unbeaten in their last eight matches. The Golden Eagles have won six straight matches since a tie against Seattle Pacific.
The match seemed headed to overtime when Cal State L.A.'s Morten Marthinsen was fouled near midfield with 30 seconds remaining. Kristian Gaustad sent a booming free kick toward the far post and Hewitt was able to head it into the goal with just eight seconds left. The goal was Hewitt's fourth of the season.
Chico State took a 1-0 lead in the 70th minute when Ian Hiegert blasted a line drive from about 30 yards out high into the net after a centering pass from Mike Gardner.
The Golden Eagles, who scored two late second-half goals to beat Cal State Stanislaus on Friday, struck twice again on Sunday. John Massaquoi, who scored both goals on Friday against the Warriors, got Cal State L.A. even on Sunday with his seventh goal of the season. That goal, too, was the result of a free kick. This one was partially cleared, but Rufino Franco chipped it back in to Massaquoi, who wheeled around a defender to the outside and fired a shot just inside the far post.
Hewitt had four shots, while Massaquoi had three for the Golden Eagles. Both teams finished with 10 shots.
Tobias Hummel made three saves for Cal State L.A.
The Golden Eagles will return to action on Sunday with a home match against Grand Canyon.
