Cal State L.A. Jumps Out To Quick Lead, Beats Broncos

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team got off to a fast start on Friday and made sure it finished strongly as well.

The Golden Eagles got two goals from Jason Swope in a span of 49 seconds in the first half and went on to defeat Cal Poly Pomona, 4-0, at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (4-2-2, 2-1 CCAA) held a 3-0 lead at halftime and got its final goal on a blast by Kyle Hewitt in the 72nd minute.

Cal Poly Pomona (1-4-1, 1-2-1) had only allowed two goals in its first three conference matches.

Swope has four goals in the Golden Eagles' last two games and he now shares the team lead in goals with five.

Tobias Hummel made three saves to post his third shutout of the season.

Swope got the Golden Eagles on the board in the 18th minute when he accepted a perfect pass from A.J. Matthews in the box and knocked a shot into an open net.

Then, just 49 seconds later, Swope found himself in almost the exact same spot and the result was the same, a goal for Cal State L.A. Passes from John Massaquoi and Hewitt set up the goal.

The Broncos had a couple good chances after that, but a shot by Miguel Abascal went just wide and a header by Tyler Reinhart was tipped by a leaping Hummel off the crossbar and away.

The Golden Eagles made it 3-0 in the 36th minute. Spencer Tripp got a nice pass from Marvin Sandoval and notched his first goal of the season.

Cal Poly Pomona's Ben Van der Fluit had a good scoring chance late in the half, but his direct kick was sent just wide.

The Golden Eagles got their final goal courtesy of a long blast by Hewitt from about 30 yards out that was perfectly placed and just over the leaping attempt by Cal Poly Pomona goalie Brian Catalano.

Cal Poly Pomona had a 10-8 edge in shots and had a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a home match against Cal State San Bernardino.
