LOS ANGELES — Briana Chagolla scored in the second minute for Cal State LA, but UC Merced eventually earned a 1-1 draw Sunday at University Stadium.
The Golden Eagles moved to 4-2-3 overall and 1-2-1 in conference play. UC Merced remains unbeaten and is now 5-0-3 overall and 2-0-2 in conference action.
Cal State LA struck just 92 seconds into the match. After UC Merced goalkeeper Alicia Lepe stopped Chagolla's initial attempt, the Golden Eagle forward scored moments later to give her team an early 1-0 advantage.
The Golden Eagles controlled the opening half, out-shooting the Bobcats, 8-3, and earning six corner kicks. Chagolla produced four of Cal State LA's shots, while Itzel Carbajal also placed an attempt on goal.
UC Merced found the equalizer less than two minutes into the second half. Jackie Tamayo converted a chance created by Andrea Alvarenga in the 47th minute to even the score at 1-1.
The Bobcats applied pressure following the goal, but Cal State LA goalkeeper Kendyl Sumlin kept the game tied. Sumlin stopped attempts from Sarai Fresquez and Sofia Reiswig before making another save on Alvarenga in the 89th minute.
Cal State LA created late opportunities through Carisia Raygoza and Analise Quintero but was unable to produce the game-winner.
UC Merced finished with a narrow 12-11 advantage in shots and placed six attempts on goal. The Golden Eagles held an 8-5 edge in corner kicks.
Sumlin recorded four saves for Cal State LA, while Lepe made two saves for the Bobcats.
