LOS ANGELES — Celine Gehrig scored in the closing minutes, but Cal State LA's late comeback attempt fell short in a 2-1 loss to Stanislaus State Friday night at University Stadium.
The Golden Eagles fell to 4-2-2 overall and 1-2 in conference play, while the Warriors improved to 4-1-2 overall and remained unbeaten in conference action at 3-0.
Cal State LA controlled much of the action, finishing with advantages of 14-6 in shots, 7-2 in shots on goal and 9-1 in corner kicks. Stanislaus State goalkeeper Zara Mujica made six saves to preserve the victory.
The Golden Eagles created several opportunities during a scoreless first half. Kristin Mijares and Briana Chagolla forced saves from Mujica in the 13th minute, and Chagolla tested the goalkeeper again in the 31st minute. Cal State LA also earned five first-half corner kicks.
Analise Quintero nearly broke the tie shortly after halftime, but her attempt struck the crossbar in the 49th minute.
Stanislaus State opened the scoring in the 56th minute when Olivia Maragos converted a chance created by Mandy Thao. Aliah Avila doubled the Warriors' advantage with an unassisted goal in the 69th minute.
Cal State LA continued pressing and was rewarded in the 84th minute. After consecutive shots by Luna Chavez forced saves from Mujica, Gehrig tapped in a loose ball to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Golden Eagles generated one final opportunity, but Chavez's attempt in the 89th minute was unable to produce the equalizer.
Chavez led Cal State LA with five shots, including three on goal. Gehrig recorded three attempts and scored her team's lone goal, while Chagolla placed both of her shots on target.
