SEASIDE -- No. 25 Cal State LA received second-half goals from Celine Gehrig and Itzel Carbajal, while Kendyl Sumlin recorded a three-save shutout as the Golden Eagles earned a 2-0 road victory over Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday at Cardinale Stadium.
The nationally ranked Golden Eagles improved to 4-1-2 overall and 1-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. The Otters dropped to 2-2-2 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
After the teams played through a scoreless opening half, Cal State LA quickly seized control following the break.
The Golden Eagles earned a corner kick less than two minutes into the second half and capitalized moments later. Jasmine Aguilar set up Gehrig for the opening goal in the 48th minute, giving Cal State LA a 1-0 advantage.
Carbajal doubled the lead in the 64th minute, scoring on the Golden Eagles' next shot on goal to make it 2-0.
Cal State LA's defense protected the advantage the rest of the way. Sumlin stopped second-half attempts from Kamryn Bubak in the 59th minute and Juliana Dow in the 90th minute to preserve the clean sheet. She played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with three saves.
The Golden Eagles nearly opened the scoring midway through the first half when Aguilar struck the right post in the 20th minute. Sumlin later denied Naomi Tobias in the 32nd minute to keep the match scoreless entering halftime.
No. 25 Cal State LA outshot Cal State Monterey Bay, 7-4, and generated five of its attempts after the break. The Golden Eagles also finished with a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks, earning all four of their corners during the second half.
Gehrig and Carbajal each placed their only shot on goal into the net. Bailey Martinez, Luna Chavez, Kristin Mijares, Briana Chagolla and Aguilar also recorded shots for the Golden Eagles.
The victory marked Cal State LA's fourth win of the season and its first in CCAA play. The Golden Eagles return to action Friday against Stanislaus State at 7 p.m. inside University Stadium.
