SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA opened the match with an impressive first-set victory, but San Francisco State rallied to hand the Golden Eagles a 17-25, 25-14, 26-24, 25-14 defeat Saturday at the San Francisco Federal Credit Union Gym at Don Nasser Family Plaza.
Cal State LA dropped to 3-8 overall and 2-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play, while San Francisco State improved to 3-7 overall and 1-3 in conference action.
The Golden Eagles produced their best offensive performance in the opening set, recording 17 kills with only four errors for a .361 hitting percentage. That efficient attack carried Cal State LA to a 25-17 victory and an early advantage in the match.
San Francisco State responded in the second set, hitting .424 with 16 kills on the way to a 25-14 win that evened the match.
The third set proved to be the most competitive of the afternoon, featuring 14 ties and 10 lead changes. Cal State LA committed only two attacking errors in the frame, but the Gators escaped with a 26-24 victory to take a 2-1 lead.
San Francisco State then hit .478 in the fourth set and closed out the match with another 25-14 win.
Samarah DaCoud led the Golden Eagles with 12 kills, 13 digs and one service ace for a double-double. Oluwatoyin Sunday added seven kills while hitting .286, and Anaiya Cooper also finished with seven kills.
Ruby Ennis contributed three kills on four errorless attempts for a team-best .750 hitting percentage. Ennis also handed out 11 assists and collected nine digs.
Savannah Risley led Cal State LA with 13 assists, while Seriah Demski recorded four assists and one ace in her lone set of action. Juliana Speiski paced the back row with a match-high 18 digs and added two service aces.
Teegan Charapata contributed eight digs, two assists and two aces, while Avalon Heintz also served two aces. The Golden Eagles finished with eight aces as a team.
San Francisco State received 17 kills from Grace Witcher and 16 from Aidan Goodrich. The Gators finished with a .314 team hitting percentage, recording 56 kills and only 12 attacking errors. Cal State LA totaled 42 kills and hit .156 for the match.
The Golden Eagles return to action Friday at Cal Poly Pomona starting at 5 p.m.
