LOS ANGELES -- Jose Lopez scored twice and Angel Sandres contributed a goal and an assist as the newly crowned No. 1 Cal State LA men's soccer team defeated Cal Poly Pomona, 3-0, Friday at University Stadium.
The Golden Eagles remained perfect at 6-0 and opened California Collegiate Athletic Association play with a victory. Cal Poly Pomona fell to 2-3-2 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
Cal State LA entered the match ranked No. 1 in the latest United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II national poll, climbing seven positions from No. 8 after opening the season with five consecutive victories.
The Golden Eagles controlled much of the opening half and recorded nine shots, including four on goal, but Cal Poly Pomona goalkeeper Jack Chapman kept the match scoreless with four saves.
Cal State LA broke through at the 50:38 mark. Emil Kischka and Sandres combined to create the opportunity, and Lopez finished it to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Lopez struck again just over seven minutes later, scoring an unassisted goal at the 57:54 mark to double the advantage.
Sandres capped the scoring in the 84th minute. Sho Toda provided the assist, and Sandres converted the opportunity to give Cal State LA a commanding 3-0 lead.
The Golden Eagle defense protected the advantage throughout the second half. Goalkeeper Abraham Ramirez stopped three shots after halftime, including two attempts by Nico Sanchez, to complete the shutout.
Cal State LA finished with a 17-9 advantage in shots, a 9-4 edge in shots on goal and a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Lopez led the Golden Eagles with two goals on three shots, placing two attempts on target. Sandres finished with one goal and one assist on three shots.
Jose Mariscal recorded a match-high four shots, including three on goal. Orlando Erazo added three shots and placed one on target.
Ramirez played all 90 minutes and finished with four saves in the shutout. Chapman recorded six saves for Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles head to Cal State Monterey Bay for a Sunday match beginning at 2 p.m.
