SEASIDE -- No. 1 Cal State LA controlled possession and produced a commanding advantage in shots but settled for a 0-0 draw against Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday at Cardinale Stadium.
The Golden Eagles remained unbeaten at 6-0-1 overall and moved to 1-0-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. The Otters moved to 4-1-2 overall and 0-0-2 in conference action.
Cal State LA outshot Cal State Monterey Bay, 22-2, and placed six attempts on goal while holding the Otters without a shot on target. The Golden Eagles also earned seven corner kicks compared with one for Monterey Bay.
The Otters were forced to play with 10 men for most of the match after Sylas Sells received a red card in the 12th minute.
Cal State LA quickly applied pressure following the ejection. Felix Alverdale forced a save from Monterey Bay goalkeeper Griffin Welch in the 20th minute, and Allan Rosales followed with an attempt on target in the 28th.
Jose Mariscal and Geovanni Antuna each tested Welch late in the opening half, but the goalkeeper made both saves to keep the match scoreless entering halftime.
The Golden Eagles increased their attacking pressure after the break, producing 13 shots and four corner kicks during the final 45 minutes. Emil Kischka generated one of Cal State LA's best opportunities in the 64th minute, but Welch recorded his sixth save of the match.
Cal State LA continued pushing forward during the closing minutes. Jose Lopez, Saad Faiz, Antuna, Leon Steffen and Diego Ceja all recorded attempts over the final nine minutes, but the Golden Eagles were unable to find the deciding goal.
Kischka and Mariscal led Cal State LA with three shots apiece. Rosales, Lopez, Alverdale, Antuna, Faiz and Ceja each added two attempts. Six different Golden Eagles placed a shot on goal.
Abraham Ramirez played all 90 minutes in goal and anchored another shutout for Cal State LA. The Golden Eagle defense limited Monterey Bay to two first-half shots and did not allow an attempt during the second half.
Welch finished with six saves for the Otters as the top-ranked Golden Eagles extended their season-opening unbeaten streak to seven matches.
The Golden Eagles return to action Friday against Stanislaus State at 4 p.m. inside University Stadium
