GOODYEAR, ARIZONA -- Cal State LA's women's golf team got an outstanding start from junior Daniela Andrade and is in a tie for fifth after the opening round of the Palm Valley Classic.

Andrade fired a four-under-par 68 and shares the overnight lead with Colorado Christian's Kendall Simms. Andrade had seven birdies on the day, which leads the field. She carried a two-shot lead to the 18th hole, but suffered a double-bogey to fall back into a tie for the lead.

The 68 is her low round of the season and matches her career low at Cal State LA.

The Golden Eagles are tied for fifth after the opening round with a score of 7-over-par 295. Cal State LA is just four shots behind first-place Colorado State-Pueblo and three shots back of Cal State San Marcos and West Texas A&M, who are tied for second at 292.

Andrade had four birdies on her front nine and she birdied all four of the par-fives during her round.

Ayala birdied the 18th hole to get back to 2-over-par after recording three bogeys and 14 pars over her first 17 holes.

Rilee Crosby had a pair of birdies - on the par-5 second hole and the par-3 16th hole - to finish at 4-over and Talia Gutman bounced back nicely from a 7-over-par 43 on the front nine with a pair of birdies and seven pars on the back-nine to climb back to 5-over-par.

Lisette Orellana had 11 pars to highlight her round of 80, while Sarah Amaya, playing as an individual, had 14 pars in her round of 76.

The second and final round will be held on Saturday.
