ALAMEDA -- Cal State LA's women's golf team finds itself in fifth place on a tightly-packed leaderboard after the opening round of the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout hosted by Cal State East Bay.

The Golden Eagles shot a first-round of 8-over-par 296 and find themselves trailing four teams ranked ahead of them in the national rankings at the Corica Park Golf Course. No. 16 Cal State San Marcos leads at 283, No. 35 Point Loma is second at 286, No. 36 Simon Fraser and No. 24 Colorado State-Pueblo are at 295 and No. 39 Cal State LA is at 296. The Golden Eagles are one shot ahead of Seattle Pacific and tournament host Cal State East Bay.

Daniela Andrade had the best round of the day for the Golden Eagles and shot a 1-under-par 71. She had five birdies on the day and got as low as 3-under-par during the round. She is three shots out of the lead after the first round.

Talia Gutman was next for the Golden Eagles with an even-par round of 72. Gutman also had five birdies, all of which came after she was 3-over-par through seven holes. She birdied her final hole - the par-5 sixth hole to get to even par.

Joshlyn Ayala was next with a round of 3-over-par 75. She birdied both par-fives on the back nine to highlight her round.

Lisette Orellana had five birdies on her round, four of them on the front nine, to highlight her round of 6-over-par 78.

Rilee Crosby, competing as an individual, shot a round of 7-over-par 79 that featured a pair of birdies, while Sarah Amaya had no birdies, but 11 pars in a round of 80.

Cal State LA is second in the tournament field in birdies with 17.

The second and final round will be played on Tuesday, weather permitting.
