Golden Eagles Win Again As Johnson Hits 100

MERCED -- Cal State LA's women's basketball kept it rolling again on Thursday and added to an impressive list of milestones this month.

One week after Nevaeh Asiasi eclipsed 1,000 points in her Cal State LA career, head coach Torino Johnson picked up his 100th win as a Golden Eagle in an 81-41 California Collegiate Athletic Associastion victory over UC Merced on the Greg and Cathie Hostetler Court. Cal State LA (19-5, 16-3 CCAA) matched a program record with a 16th conference win and maintained its hold on second place in the conference, two games back of Cal Poly Pomona.

The Golden Eagles also extended their program-record winning streak to 13 in a row.

Mariah Blake had a career-high 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles, while Asiasi had 17 points and four rebounds. Mary Cotton had season highs in points (13) and rebounds (13) for her first double-double of the season.

Paloma Ramirez had a team-high 11 points for UC Merced (7-19,, 4-14 CCAA).

Ariyah Smith had 11 points and five assists for the Golden Eagles, while Gabriella Rones, in her first start of the season, had eight points, three rebounds and two assists.

Cal State LA shot 49.3 percent for the game (36-of-73) and was 6-of-23 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. UC Merced shot just 25 percent for the game (14-of-56) and was just 1-of-12 from 3-point range. The Bobcats were 12-of-16 from the free-throw line. Cal State LA had a 45-25 rebounding edge and committed 14 turnovers to 21 for UC Merced.

The Golden Eagles were down, 13-10, and even at 13-13 before a layup by Cotton from Smith gave the Golden Eagles a 15-13 lead after one quarter.

Cal State LA got some breathing room in the second quarter, outscoring UC Merced, 20-8, in the period to take a 35-21 halftime lead.

Cal State LA led by as many as 25 points in the third quarter, 50-25, after an offensive layup and basket from Smith and took a 50-28 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Golden Eagles extended the lead in the fourth quarter, leading by as many as 44 points and outscoring the Bobcats, 31-13, in the final period.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Stanislaus State.
