Golden Eagles Extend Their Streak With Home Win

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team made it 12 in a row with another home victory on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles shook free from a determined Cal State San Marcos team and then held off a late Cougar charge to post a 73-62 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory in University Gym. The Golden Eagles led by as many as 25 points in the third quarter and 21 points in the fourth quarter, but the Cougars got as close as nine points before the end.

Cal State LA (18-5, 15-3 CCAA) remains alone in second place by one game over Chico State and Cal Poly Humboldt and two games back of first-place Cal Poly Pomona with four conference games remaining. The Golden Eagles have already clinched a spot in the CCAA Tournament for a fifth straight season.

Nevaeh Asiasi continued her amazing late-season surge with another high-scoring game. After scoring 26 points on Thursday in a win over Cal State Monterey Bay, she added 27 points, six rebounds and three assists in the win on Saturday. The 53 points this week pushed her past 1,000 points in her Cal State LA career and she has now reached 20 or more points 12 times this season and 25 or more points eight times. In her last four games, she has scored 107 points and she has taken over the conference scoring lead with 19.0 points per game.

Amaya Fuentes had 14 points and five rebounds for the Golden Eagles and Sofia Fidelus had 11 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Kaity Haan had 20 points and nine rebounds to lead Cal State San Marcos (7-16, 4-14 CCAA), while Tatum Tamashiro had 12 points and six rebounds and Mylah Lewis had 11 points.

Ronyae Jackson had five points and four rebounds, while Ariyah Smith, Mariah Blake and Mary Cotton had four points each.

Cal State LA shot 39.1 percent for the game (25-of-64) and was just 3-of-20 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 20-of-26 from the free-throw line. Cal State San Marcos shot 46 percent (23-of-50) and was 7-of-17 from 3-point range. The Cougars were 9-of-20 from the free-throw line. Cal State San Marcos had a slender 38-36 rebounding edge and committed 22 turnovers to just nine for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA scored the first eight points of the game and never trailed, but Cal State San Marcos got to within one point during the first period and closed to within 19-16 after a 3-pointer by Tamashiro at the end of the first period.

Cal State LA saw the lead cut to 19-18 early in the second period, but went on a 15-0 run to get some breathing room. Asiasi started the run with a pair of free throws and a layup, Cotton scored on an offensive rebound and then a layup, Asiasi had a steal and a layup, Kyara Walter hit a 3-pointer and Fuentes made a layup to give the Golden Eagles a 34-18 lead. Cal State LA settled for a 38-26 halftime lead.

Cal State LA went on a 10-0 run during the third period to take a 56-31 lead and took a 60-41 lead into the final period. Fidelus hit a jumper to give the Golden Eagles a 69-49 lead with 3:40 to go and they held off the Cougars from there.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a road game at UC Merced.
