Golden Eagles upset No. 10 Cal Poly Pomona in five exciting sets

LOS ANGELES -- In five exciting sets, the Cal State LA volleyball team upset No. 10 Cal Poly Pomona, 21-25, 31-29, 24-26, 25-19, 15-12.

The Golden Eagles remain undefeated at home and improved to 4-11 overall and 3-2 in the CCAA. Cal State LA finally took down a nationally ranked team after seven attempts this season in the big upset. Cal Poly Pomona dropped its second straight and fell to 12-3 overall (4-1 in league play).

Samarah DaCoud recorded 20 kills and a career-best 22 digs to lead the Golden Eagles. It was her first career 20-20 match.

Amber Walker added 12 kills while hitting .209. Setter Ruby Ennis had 36 digs with six block assisted. Isabella Barrios was strong at the net with six assisted blocks as well.

Cal Poly Pomona's Sarah Ybarra, who had 22 kills, surpassed career kill No. 1,000 in the first set. Broncos' Renee Nachtigall had 18 digs to reach 1,000 career digs.

After dropping the opening set, Cal State LA answered in a marathon second frame. The Golden Eagles fought through a series of extended points to secure a 31-29 victory and even the match.

Cal Poly Pomona reclaimed the lead with a narrow 26-24 win in the third set, putting Cal State LA one set away from defeat.

The Golden Eagles responded again, taking the fourth set, 25-19, to force a decisive fifth. Cal State LA then completed the victory with a 15-12 win in the final set.Naomi Jackson delivered an efficient performance with five kills and only one error on 10 attempts for a .400 hitting percentage. Isabella Barrios contributed six kills and six block assists.Setter Ruby Ennis recorded 36 assists, eight digs, two service aces and six block assists. Juliana Speiski added 14 digs, six assists and two aces.

Cal State LA finished with nine service aces and 10.5 total blocks. The Golden Eagles held Cal Poly Pomona to a .162 hitting percentage while handing the Broncos their first conference loss of the season.
