Golden Eagles Blank Toros In Non-Conference Match

CARSON -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team struck for a pair of first-half goals and made them stand up in a non-conference contest at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Golden Eagles got early goals from Itzel Ramirez and Delia Bocanegra and recorded a 2-0 win over the Toros at Toro Stadium. Cal State LA (3-1-3) recorded its third straight shutout with the victory over its California Collegiate Athletic Association foe. The two teams will meet in a conference match in Los Angeles in October.

The Golden Eagles, who had battled to a pair of 0-0 draws in their two home games last week, brought their offense with them on Saturday. Cal State LA opened the scoring in the 15th minute on a goal by Ramirez, who picked up her first goal with the Golden Eagles. Jacqueline Marin picked up the assist, her first of the season.

Bocanegra, who entered the game following the goal, made it 2-0 in the 23rd minute with her second goal of the season. She leads the team with two goals, three assists and seven points. Itzel Carbajal assisted on the play, picking up her first assist of the season and the third of her career.

The Golden Eagles' defense took it from there and limited the Toros to just six shots for the game. Goalkeeper Kendyl Sumlin made three saves for her fourth shutout of the season.

Cal State LA had a 7-6 edge in shots and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. Ramirez had two of the Golden Eagles' seven shots, with Carbajal, Sofia Orozco, Bailey Martinez, Reyna Roman and Bocanegra registering one attempt each.

Cal State LA will open CCAA play on Friday with a road contest at UC Merced.
