MERCED -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team fell short in its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener at conference newcomer UC Merced.
The Golden Eagles surrendered a goal in the 76th minute and the Bobcats made it stand up for a 1-0 victory in their first-ever CCAA contest. Cal State LA (3-2-3, 0-1 CCAA) had a four-game unbeaten streak snapped, while UC Merced (4-1-3, 1-0 CCAA) posted its sixth shutout of the season.
The only goal came on a goal by Trinidad Quiroz, who received a long ball behind the Golden Eagle defense and shot to the upper right corner of the net. A video review for offside was inconclusive and the goal stood.
Cal State LA tried to recover and had a pair of chances by
Itzel Carbajal in the 76th and 87th minute saved by UC Merced goalkeeper Alicia Lepe.
Cal State LA had an 11-8 advantage in shots, including a 7-2 edge in the opening half. UC Merced had a 6-4 advantage in the second half.
The Golden Eagles had all three corner kicks in the contest.
Lepe had four saves for the Bobcats, while
Kendyl Sumlin had two saves for the Golden Eagles.
Carbajal and
Lizbet Saligan had three shots each for the Golden Eagles, while
Kristin Mijares had two shots.
Sofia Orozco,
Syra Valdez and
Delia Bocanegra had one shot each.
Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a match at Stanislaus State at 2 p.m.
