TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team had more shots on Sunday, but the same frustrating result against a California Collegiate Athletic Association opponent.
The Golden Eagles surrendered a first-half goal and Stanislaus State made it stand up for a 1-0 victory at Warrior Stadium. Cal State LA (3-3-2, 0-2 CCAA) dropped both conference games on opening weekend by a 1-0 score. Stanislaus State (5-2-2, 1-1 CCAA) split its first two conference games on the weekend.
Cal State LA had a 17-10 advantage in shots, including a big 10-3 edge in the second half. The Golden Eagles also had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks and had all four taken in the second half.
Kendyl Sumlin made two saves for the Golden Eagles, while Stanislaus State goalkeeper Zara Mujica made seven saves, including five in the second half when Cal State LA had a huge edge in offensive possession.
Itzel Carbajal had a match-high six shots for the Golden Eagles, while
Delia Bocanegra had three shots and
Jacqueline Marin and
Celine Gehrig had two each.
Sofia Orozco,
Lindsey Metcalfe,
Itzel Ramirez and
Kristin Mijares had one shot each.
The only goal of the game came in the 29th minute from Stanislaus State's Olivia Maragos with an assist from Haylee Sousa.
Cal State LA had the edge in opportunities in the second half, particularly in the final 10 minutes as the Golden Eagles pushed to tie the game. Cal State LA had three corner kicks and five shots down the stretch with Bocanegra and Gehrig firing off a pair of shots and Carbajal with the final bid in the 89th minute.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with its conference home opener against Cal State Monterey Bay at 7 p.m.
